Voy a Sobrevivir

Voy a Sobrevivir

Guías de supervivencia al mundo hispanohablante

______________________________________________________________

You're traveling through Argentina at a time when Fernando de la Rua, the president, is tremendously unpopular. While things are pretty relaxed from a traveling perspective, (you just hit the slopes in Bariloche, bought some crazy hippie art in El Bolsón, and ate some tasty carne asada right at the ranch where the beef was raised) you are now in the capital city of Buenos Aires.

You notice a festive atmosphere starting to overcome the streets of Buenos Aires, so you decide to buy a little tambor (drum) and join in. Moments later, you are part of a huge muchedumbre (crowd) and the dynamic becomes tense rather than celebratory. Suddenly, your eyes start to sting and water as you are engulfed in a noxious mist. Tear gas!
Your mind flashes back to several newspaper headlines you saw while you were on that epic 20-hour bus ride. One said something about "manifestaciones," another, "golpe de estado."

You are participating in a coup d'etat. That's right -- you are complicit in an effort to overthrow Argentina's unpopular president!

¿Qué vas a hacer?

Vas a sobrevivir. You are going to survive. That's the plan. Upon finishing this project, the culmination of two years of Spanish at Animas High School, you will be well-poised to enjoy travel to a Spanish-speaking country by using your amazing Spanish language skills to navigate every day scenarios and hopefully avoid getting tear-gassed too!

Essential Questions:
·      What skills do you need (cultural, lexical, observational, and linguistic) to successfully travel in a Spanish-speaking country?
·      How are elements of day-to-day life (ex. bartering, greetings/leave-takings, transportation, food etc.) different throughout the Spanish-speaking world? How are they similar?

Project Objectives
·      To develop survival Spanish speaking, listening, and reading skills so you can travel successfully in a Spanish-speaking country.
·      To enhance awareness about cultural and linguistic variation across the Spanish speaking world.
·      To inspire you to travel abroad to a Spanish-speaking country!

Project Tasks
1.    Research travel scenarios and a variety of cultural and linguistic do's and don'ts for travel to a Spanish-speaking country of your choice (See list for countries for which we have adequate resources. Ideally choose one you actually hope to visit someday!).
2.    Create a "survival guide" to equip you or another traveler with skills to navigate a variety of scenarios in that country.
3.    Prepare in advance and participate in skits on exhibition night using survival Spanish to navigate common travel scenarios.

Exhibition
This project will be exhibited as part of the all-school Humanities/Spanish exhibition on May 9th. You will have your country-specific survival guides on display and should be prepared to answer questions about travel to your country. On exhibition night, you will also be acting out the survival scenarios.
